Justin Thomas gives away club after PGA Championship

Justin Thomas probably won’t have many good memories from this week’s PGA Championship. The former Alabama All-American was seeking to win the major tournament in consecutive years and for the third time overall. Instead, Thomas finished at 12-over 292 and tied for 65th.

But Thomas made quite a memory for a young fan on the 18th hole on Sunday.

After completing his fourth round, Thomas took his Titleist Vokey 60-degree wedge out of his bag and handed it to a boy among the spectators.

Thomas’ caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, told Sports Illustrated that Thomas probably would have replaced the club anyway, because the bunkers on the East Course at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, had taken such a toll on the club face’s grooves.

Thomas came from seven shots back in the final round last year to win the PGA Championship. But he didn’t have that kind of performance on Sunday. A double-bogey on the sixth hole followed by a bogey on the seventh set him back, and he carded a 2-over 72 in the final round.

That still equaled his best round of the tournament. Thomas shot 2 over in the first round and 3 over in the second round to make the cut on the number, then had a 5-over showing in the rain on Saturday.
