Record lows set overnight in 3 Alabama cities: What to expect today

It was another record-setting cold night in Alabama.

The National Weather Service said several cities had record lows early this morning as an arctic airmass continues to dominate Alabama’s weather pattern.

The weather service said that three Alabama cities added to the record books today and another tied its existing low temperature record.

Here are Thursday’s record lows:

* Anniston: 28 degrees, breaking the record of 29 degrees from 1948.

* Montgomery: 29 degrees, breaking the record of 32 degrees from 1989.

* Tuscaloosa: 31 degrees, breaking the record of 32 degrees from 1948 and 1989.

In addition, Birmingham dropped to 32 degrees, tying its record low last reached in 1913 and 1964, the weather service said.

Some other unofficial low temperatures from around the state on Thursday morning:

* Atmore: 36 degrees

* Auburn: 34 degrees

* Decatur: 28 degrees

* Demopolis: 31 degrees

* Dothan: 33 degrees

* Eufaula: 30 degrees

* Gadsden: 25 degrees

* Greenville: 29 degrees

* Gulf Shores: 36 degrees

* Haleyville: 26 degrees

* Huntsville: 31 degrees

* Mobile: 36 degrees

* Muscle Shoals: 30 degrees

* Prattville: 31 degrees

* Talladega: 28 degrees

* Troy: 31 degrees

The weather service said temperatures today will be several degrees warmer than Wednesday, but still below average for mid-October.

Forecasters added that it will be another cold night tonight but most areas will remain above freezing with lows in the middle to upper 30s. (Tonight’s forecast low temperatures are at the top of this post.)

Good news for warmer-weather fans: The weather service said a big warm-up is expected on Friday, with highs reaching the 70s again.

The next chance for rain won’t come until Tuesday with the arrival of another cold front, according to forecasters.
