Vigor football team puts on a show against McGill-Toolen in new stadium
Robert Brazile is the greatest football star in Vigor High School history.
So, there was no way the Pro Football Hall of Fame player was going to miss the grand opening of Wolfpack Stadium on the school’s campus.
“This was a long time coming,” said Brazile, a graduate of Vigor before a stellar career at Jackson State led to him being a first-round draft pick of the Houston Oilers. “When I was in Houston, every high school there had their own stadium. That’s what we’ve always wanted for Vigor. Now we’re showing we can support a stadium on campus.”

A nice crowd turned out to watch the Wolves square off against McGill-Toolen and new head coach David Faulkner. But after only five offensive plays for each team, players and spectators were chased from the stadium by a rain and lightning storm.
After a delay of more than a half hour, the Wolves were impressive, posting a 20-0 win in the three full quarters that involved varsity players.
Kelvin Malone got the scoring going with a 4-yard run in the first quarter. Just before halftime, Kelvin Brisker found Gerritt Holcombe on a 32-yard touchdown pass.
Malone delivered the most explosive play of the game in the third quarter with a 75-yard run behind left tackle Micah Dubose (a Georgia commit) and left guard Willie Powell.
The fourth quarter was played by junior varsity players for each team.
Even as the ominous storm clouds were forming during the pregame, tailgating fans were enthusiastic. One adult fan led a group into the stadium with a chant of, “We got our own stadium! Fire up Wolfpack, Fire up!”
The new stadium seats 3,500 fans. That’s about half the number of fans who usually attend a Vigor-Blount. That has led to some speculation that the season-opening game between the two rivals could be played elsewhere.
Vigor coach Marcus Cook acknowledged the possible dilemma but didn’t have a comment on the scheduling question.
Regardless of what happens with the opener, the enthusiast Vigor fans are happy to have an on-campus stadium to call their own.
