1 killed, 3 injured when shots fired at adult birthday party in Birmingham neighborhood
Gunfire rang out in a Birmingham neighborhood Friday night, killing one person and injuring three others.
The shooting happened at 10:08 p.m. in the 900 block of 47th Street North. That area is known as Baby Kingston.
It is the city’s third homicide since Wednesday.
Birmingham police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said South Precinct officers responded to the neighborhood on a report of multiple people shot. When they arrived, they found a woman and three men – all adults – injured.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported all of the victims to UAB Hospital.
One of the men was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital, Fitzgerald said. The other two men are expected to survive their injuries.
The woman was initially thought to be shot, but medical workers determined that while she was injured, it was not from gunfire. She, too, is expected to be OK.
Fitzgerald said a group of people were gathered outside at a small apartment complex for a birthday party when the assailant – who has not been identified – approached the party and opened fire.
Investigators estimate at least 20 shots were fired.
“From what we were told, the suspect approached on foot, there was no argument, and the suspect began firing at the crowd,’’ Fitzgerald said.
“It’s very alarming,’’ he said. “We need this person off the streets.”
“We know the streets talk,’’ he said. “Please come forward with this information.”
The victim is the city’s 48th homicide in 2023. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and two others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 59 homicides, including the 48 in Birmingham.
