Tom Brady’s advice for Bryce Young

The first four quarterbacks in the 2023 NFL Draft took a side trip while attending the 29th annual NFL Players Association Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The quarterbacks met with the seventh QB selected in the 2000 NFL Draft during a luncheon at the home of Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin that also was attended by rapper and record producer Travis Scott.

Tom Brady was selected in the NFL Draft on April 16, 2000, had completed his rookie season and was about to start his second NFL training camp when this year’s No. 1 pick, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, was born on July 25, 2001. Yet Brady did not retire until Feb. 1, 2023.

In between, Brady led seven teams to Super Bowl victories, received the NFL Most Valuable Player Award three times and won the Super Bowl MVP Award five times.

Brady offered some advice to the four quarterbacks – with C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson and Will Levis joining Young – during the luncheon.

“Going in the second round, in the end, that’s not really that big of a deal,” Brady said. “Going first overall, in the end, it’s not a big deal. It’s great. You got an opportunity. You’re probably going to be paid more than anyone for a time period. But I was drafted 199, and I just outlasted everybody. …

“There’s another me back there, right? So how do I keep my edge on everybody. I had to keep working. I didn’t go: Hey, I’m good, right? I won three Super Bowls. I’m good.”

The Carolina Panthers chose Young with the first pick in the 88th NFL Draft on April 27. The Houston Texans followed by taking Stroud from Ohio State at No. 2. Richardson joined the Indianapolis Colts from Florida at No. 4. And Kentucky’s Levis went to the Tennessee Titans at No. 33, the second pick of the second round.

“When something goes wrong with Trav or with Mike, with his company, with me, the only thing you do is work harder,” Brady said. “The only thing you do is work harder. Defeats can’t make you work less hard. I think that’s the point. When (expletive) hits the fan, you got to change the energy. You got to put more into it – never less into it.”

On his Instagram account, Brady posted photographs from the luncheon, including shaking hands with Young, and wrote that he thought he “had more fun than everyone there.”

“Such a special day being able to speak with and learn from four young professional QBs,” Brady wrote. “One of my idols, Steve Young, encouraged me always to ‘pay it forward.’ Now that I’ve come to the end of my 23-year journey, I am so excited to watch and help the next group reach their potential as athletes, as teammates and men working to bring the best out of themselves and the communities they represent. We got to spend many hours, talking, learning and discussing what it takes to be your best. In my opinion, hard work and consistent discipline are two critical ingredients to that formula.”

The four quarterbacks are among 45 of the NFL’s most “marketable new stars” who are attending the four-day Rookie Premiere. The NFLPA’s annual event features seminars on financial planning and brand building and connects the players with business partners that will help them “develop their personal brands and careers off the field.”
