JUCO transfer Chad Baker-Mazara commits to Auburn men’s basketball

Bruce Pearl told reporters Wednesday that he was looking to sign another swingman.

“I think the last vital portal pickup will be a wing, a scoring guard. That would be the last vital,” Pearl said. And I think after that, it’ll be filling in. Which is very important also, but this one is very, very important because we’ve got an opportunity to replace a starter in Allen Flanigan.”

Chad Baker-Mazara answered Pearl’s call less than 24 hours later when the 6-foot-7, 190-pound wing announced that he would come to Auburn after transferring from Northwest Florida State College.

Baker-Mazara shot 48.8% from the field and 46.9% from three on 143 shot attempts last season, averaging 15.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists for the Raiders.

Breaking down the changes for Auburn men’s basketball

Baker-Mazara started his college career during the 2021-22 season at Duquesne, averaging 9.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in 24.4 minutes per game on 43.8% shooting. He also shot 41.7% from three for the Dukes. His next stop was San Diego State, where he averaged 6.4 points and 2.0 rebounds in 12.9 minutes during 31 games, including a first-round NCAA Tournament loss against Creighton.

Baker-Mazara left San Diego State after his sophomore season and played for the Raiders as a junior. He’s the third transfer to the Plains since the Tigers finished the 2022-23 season with a second-round NCAA Tournament loss against Houston.

Chaney Johnson (Alabama-Huntsville) and Denver Jones (Florida) also transferred to Auburn. Five-star class of 2023 point guard Aden Holloway will join the trio of transfers as newcomers to Pearl’s squad.
