Roanoke police are investigating a mysterious shooting death that happened early Sunday morning.

According to police, an officer heard shots fired near the Corner One store on Main Street at about 2:03 a.m.

Officers began searching the area, but never received a call from a victim or were able to pinpoint the location of the shots.

A short time later, officers reported hearing more gun shots coming from a different location. It was then that dispatchers received a call of shots fired into a vehicle at the intersection of Knight Avenue and Commerce Street.

Inside the vehicle, police found the body of Dwight Lamar Poole, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
