Third-round defensive tackles sign first NFL contracts

A pair of defensive tackles who played home games in Tuscaloosa, ended their college careers with victories in New Orleans bowls and were selected in the third round of the NFL Draft on April 28 have signed their first contracts.

On Monday, the Las Vegas Raiders announced former Alabama standout Byron Young had signed and the Detroit Lions announced former Northridge High School and North Alabama standout Brodric Martin had signed.

Young joined Las Vegas as the 70th selection in this year’s draft. Martin joined Detroit at No. 96.

Drafted players receive four-year contracts. The values of those contracts are based on draft position, the NFL’s salary cap of $224.8 million for the 2023 season and this year’s rookie compensation pool in a formula spelled out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players association.

While terms were not announced on Monday, the values of the contracts can be estimated, which the sports financial website spotrac.com has done, with Young signing a contract worth an estimated $5.669 million, with a $1.123 million signing bonus, and Martin signing a contract worth an estimated $5.304 million, with an $857,514 signing bonus.

Young went to the Raiders after four seasons at Alabama. Martin had a more roundabout trip to the NFL.

After playing defensive end and tight end for Northridge in Tuscaloosa, Martin started his college career in 2017 with a redshirt season at North Alabama. Over the next three seasons at UNA, Martin started every game before transferring to Western Kentucky, where he played two seasons with the Hilltoppers.

Martin ended his college career in WKU’s 44-23 victory over South Alabama in the New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 21, then played in the East-West Shrine Bowl in Las Vegas.

Young ended his college career in Alabama’s 45-20 victory over Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Dec. 31, then played in the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile.
