Severe weather halts play in AHSAA baseball finals
The first game of the Class 1A state baseball championship series between No. 1 Appalachian and Brantley at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park was stopped late Monday afternoon due to lightning and heavy showers.
Appalachian is currently leading 6-1 in the top of the fifth.
The first game of the Class 2A championship between Ariton and Vincent was scheduled to start at 7 p.m. That game has now been moved to Jacksonville State with a scheduled start time of approximately 9:15 p.m.
All Game 1s this week were scheduled to be played at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park with Game 2 and Game 3, if necessary, to be played at Jacksonville State.
AHSAA officials have said they will try to finish the 1A game in Oxford tonight.
The Eagles (29-4) took the lead with two runs in the first and then added four more in the fourth. When the game was delayed at 5:35 p.m., Appalachian’s Chris Heekin was on first after a lead-off single in the fifth.
Cole Gargus’ RBI single accounted for one run in the second and another scored on an error. Garrett Helms singled in two runs in the fourth on a hard hit ball that Brantley shortstop Jayden Parks couldn’t quite corral. The final two runs scored on an error by the third baseman.
Brantley’s lone run came on AJ Kilpatrick’s groundout in the second.
