Here’s the best advice Niall Horan gave Ryley Tate Wilson on ‘The Voice’

Niall Horan knows the music industry and has a successful history on reality TV. As it turns out, the former One Direction singer is happy to share his experiences — and relay his wisdom — as a coach on “The Voice.”

Alabama’s Ryley Tate Wilson, one of the top two singers on Horan’s team, said he’s received lots of tips and guidance from his coach this season, as Wilson has moved from the blind auditions to the battle rounds to the playoffs. However, one piece of advice stands out for the teen.

“The No. 1 thing that he keeps coming back to is being humble, and that is what’s going to get you far,” Wilson told AL.com. “He says if you walk into a room and you act like you’re the most talented person there — and you act like you deserve what you’re auditioning for, and what you’re trying to get out of record executives — then they’re going to view you as mean and pretentious and stuck-up, and they don’t like that.

“They want people who are humble and easy to work with, and fun to work with,” Wilson said. “It pays off a lot, is what he says. These are his words: Be the most talented person in the room, and don’t let anyone know it.”

Horan, 29, is nearing the end of his first season as a celebrity coach on “The Voice.” NBC announced on Monday that Horan will return for Season 24, alongside new coach Reba McEntire (replacing Blake Shelton) and returning veterans John Legend and Gwen Stefani. That’s good news for Horan’s fans, many of whom have been following him since he appeared on “The X Factor” in 2010.

One Direction (which also included Harry Styles) was formed on “X Factor” during Season 7 of the British TV series. One Direction took third place on the show that year, and went on to become one of the top-selling boy bands of all time. Horan went solo in 2016 after One Direction went on hiatus, and has released three albums since then, including 2023′s “The Show.”

He’s now a social media powerhouse with 40.7 million followers on Twitter, 32 million followers on Instagram, 9.2 million followers on Facebook and 7.5 million followers on TikTok.

Horan immediately established a genial persona as a coach on “The Voice,” and his nice-guy demeanor isn’t an act, Wilson said.

“I love Niall,” Wilson said. “He’s always very, very down-to-earth. He’s never pretentious or rude or, I don’t know, he doesn’t seem like a celebrity when you’re with him. And I know he was in one of the biggest boy bands ever. But he doesn’t feel like a celebrity when you’re with him. He seems like a vocal coach or someone helping you that is just super-knowledgeable and cares about you. I love working with Niall. It’s been an amazing experience.”

On Monday night, Wilson will compete in the live semifinals of “The Voice” as one of the top eight singers, two of whom are on Team Niall. (The other remaining contestant from Horan’s team is Gina Miles.) Viewer votes, cast during a five-minute window on the 7 p.m. episode, will determine whether Wilson becomes one of the top five singers and nabs a spot in the finals.

(NOTE: Wilson isn’t the only singer from Alabama who made the semifinals on Season 23 of “The Voice.” D. Smooth, a Birmingham native, is in the top eight as a member of Kelly Clarkson’s team. He’ll sing on Monday’s episode, as well.)

Wilson, 15, is a Montgomery resident and the son of Kelley and Todd Wilson. He’s homeschooled and has performed with theater troupes in his hometown, including the Wetumpka Depot Players. Wilson also sings regularly with the choir at his home church, Landmark Church of Christ. This is his first time on reality TV.

If you watch: “The Voice” semifinals for Season 23 will air on Monday, May 15, at 7 p.m. CT on NBC. The finals are set for May 22-23. Early episodes of the show were filmed in advance. The semifinals and finals will be broadcast live.
