See video of dust devil hitting when little league batter is at home plate
A video by a baseball mom is taking off on social media.
Meteorologist James Spann shared a video from Alabama native Lindsay Broome on social media. Broome now lives in Florida and captured the video showing a small – but fierce – dust devil whipping up on home plate just as a child was ready to swing his bat. The dust devil blows off the catcher’s hat as the umpire wraps him in his arms and hurriedly moves him away from home plate.
The video has been viewed more than 18,000 times.
According to the National Weather Service, dirt devils are common wind phenomenon that are created by strong surface heating, usually where surfaces such as asphalt or dirt meet. While they are typically smaller and less intense than a tornado, they can reach up to 300 feet wide and 1000 feet tall.
Wind speeds in larger dust devils can reach 60 mph.
