Quinnen Williams running out of patience over contract

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams seems to be running short on patience with the New York Jets.

The former Alabama All-American has played four seasons for the Jets and is under contract to the team for the 2023 season. But the biography section of his Twitter account now reads: “Defensive tackle for …”

Williams is seeking a contract extension with New York, and the Jets have indicated they want to get one done with the 2022 All-Pro selection.

At a press conference on April 25, New York general manager Joe Douglas gave an update on getting that accomplished.

“Still optimistic,” Douglas said. “Have had a lot of positive discussions with (agent) Nicole (Lynn). Optimistic. I feel like we’re trending in a good place, so optimistic and hopeful is how I would describe that.”

Williams responded to a Twitter post of Douglas’ comments with the word optimistic in quotes and a video of himself sipping tea.

Williams also has since retweeted a report on the New York Giants signing nose tackle Dexter Lawrence to a four-year, $90 million contract extension.

The third player picked in the 2019 NFL Draft, Williams finished second among the NFL’s defensive interior linemen with 12 sacks last season. The former Wenonah High School star also recorded career highs with 12 tackles for loss, 28 quarterback hits and four pass breakups and equaled career highs with 55 tackles, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Williams is scheduled to play the 2023 season for $9.594 million after the Jets picked up their option for a fifth season on his rookie contract during the offseason last year.

At a postseason press conference, Williams said he wants to be with New York “for years to come” but wouldn’t report for the Jets’ offseason program until he got a contract extension.

Wiliams has not participated in New York’s offseason program so far. The offseason work is voluntary, except for the three-day mandatory minicamp. The Jets’ mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 13-15.
