Jalen Hurts tabs Landon Dickerson for bear protection

Jalen Hurts enjoys being in the outdoors “to decompress” from his job as the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback. And he said in the latest episode of Whistle’s “Days Off” series that if he ever got lost in the woods, he hopes Eagles teammate Landon Dickerson is with him.

Both players are former Alabama standouts.

“If I have to be stuck in the woods with one teammate, it for sure would have to be Landon Dickerson, our left guard,” Hurts said. “I know we’d make it out. I know if we fight, like, a big grizzly bear or something like that, he’ll handle it.”

From the Houston suburb of Channelview, Hurts has had to adjust to being outside in Pennsylvania.

“I know being from Houston, I grew up outside,” Hurts said. “With boiled crawfish, with barbecue, we do all these things outside.

“I think being in Philly now, it’s a different type of outside, but I’m getting used to it. When it’s cold, it’s cold – the wind, the snow. I had to learn how to use a shovel. I’ve never had to shovel snow before, but that’s been something I’ve adjusted to, too.”

Outdoor activities are one of the ways that Hurts gets back “in tune.”

“I think one thing people have to realize about anything you do in any position is you have to be at peace with yourself and find different ways to do that,” Hurts said, “whether that’s talking to someone, writing your thoughts down, getting outside doing something. It’s up to that person to define what that is for them. But I do a lot of things just to be in tune with who I am.”

Hurts is in his third season with the Eagles, and he thinks Philadelphia weather can be a winning edge for the city’s NFL team.

“I embrace the weather. I embrace the cold,” Hurts said. “I think for us being in Philly it’s kind of an advantage because we’re going to have opportunities to practice in the cold and acclimate to it, so when we go to Chicago or we have these home games in December, we’re ready for the weather.”

Six weeks into the NFL’s 2022 season, the Eagles own the league’s only unbeaten record. Hurts has taken every offensive snap for Philadelphia, ranks second in the NFL with six rushing touchdowns and has the NFC’s second-best passing-efficiency rating at 98.4.

Hurts has completed 123-of-184 passes for 1,514 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions and run for 293 yards on 77 carries.

“I’m just taking everything day-by-day, honestly,” Hurts said. “That’s always been my motto. Don’t ride waves, don’t worry about different external factors. Focus on the climb, focus on taking a step every day. Everybody talks about wanting to be perfect, chasing perfection, but you got to be able to chase progress. It’ll all handle itself in the end.”

After defeating the Dallas Cowboys 26-17 in an NFC East showdown on Sunday night, Philadelphia has an open date in Week 7. The Eagles will return to the field on Oct. 30, when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit Lincoln Financial Field.
