Former Alabama prep star and Tide basketball commit to transfer to UCF

Jaykwon Walton nearly returned to Alabama to continue his basketball career. Instead, the former G.W. Carver-Montgomery prep star will transfer from Wichita State to Central Florida.

Walton was rated as a four-star transfer and scored 13.9 minutes last fall. He figured to be a part of Alabama’s new-look guard rotation when he announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide on March 28.

Yet, nearly a month later, Walton was arrested and charged with second-degree possession of marijuana. Days after Walton was released on a $500 bond, Alabama head coach Nate Oats said the program was “no longer recruiting” Walton.

The 6-foot-7 guard was a top-100 recruit out of Montgomery and spent time at Georgia, Shelton State and Witchita State. Walton has already used his one-time transfer eligibility waiver and will need an NCAA waiver to play for the Knights.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein tweeted the news of Walton’s transfer. UCF went 19-15 last season and made it to the second round of the NIT tournament.

Alabama eventually secured two other transfer guards in Cal State Fullerton’s Latrell Wrightsell Jr. and Hofstra’s Aaron Estrada.
