Florida teacher drunk at school track meet threatened wife with gun, sheriff says

A West Florida teacher has been suspended after his arrest for aggravated assault, having allegedly been drunk at a school track meet and then later pointing a gun at his wife.

According to the Escambia County, (Fla.) Jail Docket, Jerrod Wade Novotny, 44, was taken into custody Tuesday night on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

An arrest report obtained from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office states that his wife told police Novotny had been drunk when he arrived at his daughter’s track meet at Washington High School. His behavior made her angry and she told him not to join them for dinner at a local restaurant later that evening.

Novotny showed up anyway, the report reads, “belligerent and drunk.” His wife told police that after they arrived home, she and their two children slept in the daughter’s bedroom “because they were scared by Jerrod’s demeanor” at the restaurant.

Later that night, the wife awoke to find Novotny standing over her and their daughter, “with one arm extended, a mostly black with some silver handgun at her.”

According to the report, when Novotny realized his wife was awake, he hid the gun behind his back.

Novotny posted $5,000 bail Wednesday and was released.

The Escambia County School District issued this statement to WEAR in Pensacola on the incident:

“This is a law enforcement matter. ECPS will continue to cooperate with our local law enforcement partners. We will abide by Florida law related to the appropriate employment actions required of us. This individual is currently suspended, per these statutory requirements,” the statement reads.

The school website lists Novotny as a social studies teacher.
