Whole Earth Brands closing Decatur facility, 85 jobs affected

Whole Earth Brands is closing its Decatur facility, according to the Alabama Department of Commerce.

About 85 jobs will be affected, starting June 30, according to the Commerce Department’s WARN List.

Whole Earth Brands focuses on natural food alternative offerings, such as plant-based, clean label and non-sugar products.

The company took control of the Decatur facility in 2021, but according to CFO Duane Portwood during a March earnings call, the facility experienced labor availability challenges during the pandemic.

During 2022, we worked hard to improve manufacturing production and restore customer service levels as separate as a result of the supply difficulties,” he said. “While I’m pleased to say that we were successful in that regard, it is clear that the costs associated with that facility are structurally too high, which was the basis for the decision to shut down this operation.”

The company has already begun shifting production across its network.
