Teams in three classes earned spots on Wednesday for next week’s AHSAA softball state championship tournament.

The second day of regional action produced 24 qualifiers among Class 1A, Class 2A and Class 3A – some games remain to be played – at four sites while Class 6A teams played to the winners bracket final.

The upset of the day came when Class 6A top-ranked Wetumpka fell to unranked Baldwin County 3-0 in first round action. Wetumpka responded with a 10-0 win over Theodore in elimination bracket play and faces Saraland on Thursday.

Baldwin County beat Pike Road 5-0 in second round play with Madilyn Byrd pitching both wins. Baldwin County plays Spanish Fort in the winners bracket final.

Regional tournaments are being played at Gulf Shores Sportsplex (South), Montgomery’s Lagoon Park (Central), Albertville’s Sand Mountain Park (East), and Florence’s Coffee O’Neal Park (North). Regionals consist of eight teams in each class except Class 7A with only four teams.

The winners bracket champion is the state tournament No. 1 qualifier and the elimination bracket winner is the No. 2 qualifier in each class.

Class 3A qualifiers: South No. 1 Opp, No. 2 Ashford; Central No. 1 Beulah, No. 2 St. James; East No. 1 Plainview, No. 2 Piedmont vs. Glencoe; North No. 1 Danville, No. 2 Mars Hill Bible vs. Madison Academy or Winfield.

Class 2A qualifiers: South No. 1 J.U. Blacksher, No. 2 Wicksburg; Central No. 1 Thorsby, No. 2 Lamar County; East No. 1 Pleasant Valley, No. 2 Pisgah vs. Ider; North No. 1 Hatton vs. Sumiton Christian, No. 2 Hatton/Sumiton Christian loser vs. Lexington or Red Bay.

Class 1A qualifiers: South No. 1 Leroy, No. 2 Brantley; Central No. 1 Maplesville, No. 2 Verbena; East No. 1 Skyline, No. 2 Spring Garden vs. Cedar Bluff; North No. 1 Cherokee vs. Waterloo, No. 2 Cherokee/Waterloo vs. Athens Bible or Hackleburg.

Class 6A winners bracket games: Spanish Fort vs. Baldwin County (South), Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa vs. Helena (Central), Oxford vs. Pell City (East), Mortimer Jordan/Hazel Green winner vs. Hartselle/Athens winner (North).

Class 6A finishes on Thursday while Class 7A, Class 5A and Class 4A begin play.
