Alabama football secures Louisiana transfer DB Trey Amos

Alabama added a key piece of defensive depth to its secondary on Tuesday. Trenayvian ‘Trey’ Amos announced his transfer to the Crimson Tide on social media.

The Louisiana-Lafayette cornerback visited Tuscaloosa last weekend and posed with his now-position coach Travaris Robinson. Despite a stop by to home-state LSU afterward, Amos declared he was “LOCKED IN” with the Tide for his final two years of eligibility.

He recorded 35 total tackles last year for the Rajin’ Cajuns across 11 games. He’s recorded one interception in three seasons, earning consistent playing time after entering the program as a three-star in the class of 2020. Amos posted a team-high eight pass breakups last fall and entered the portal on April 30.

He was one of two transfer targets that figure to be starting options in Nick Saban’s secondary this fall. Another target, UAB’s Jaylen Key spent Monday in Alabama and has the Tide in his final six.

Alabama lost three transfers in the spring session, two of which patrolled the secondary. Jahquez Robinson transferred to Colorado, joining former Tide coach Charles Kelly. Tre’Quon Fegans departed for USC last weekend.

The Tide’s secondary now has a set of veteran options to pair with its freshman Caleb Downs, returning starting cornerbacks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold, Malachi Moore, Kristian Story and Earl Little Jr. First-year player Tony Mitchell remains suspended.

“He’s actually played safety all spring long,” Saban said after Moore’s strong performance in last month’s A-Day. “He didn’t play Star at all because we’ve been developing Earl (Little) at Star. But when we had a couple guys get in the portal, they were both stars, so Malachi had to go back and play star, and Earl, who’s been practicing a lot with the ones, actually had to play with the twos because it was the best thing for the team for us to get through today and have two guys that had experience at that position.”

Alabama, which wasn’t shy about its portal interests this spring, has pulled in four players overall. Tight end CJ Dippre (Maryland), linebacker Trezmen Marshall (Georgia), quarterback Tyler Buchner (Notre Dame) and now Amos figure to be competing for starting roles in the fall ahead of Week 1 against Middle Tennessee.
