Auburn adds another former Tulsa offensive lineman from transfer portal

Auburn’s offensive line rehabilitation project took another step forward this offseason.

After adding eight offensive linemen, including a trio of experienced transfers, after the season, the Tigers picked up another piece on the transfer market as former Tulsa lineman Jaden Muskrat announced his commitment to the program Monday night. Muskrat is the second former Tulsa offensive lineman to join Auburn this offseason, as the program added Dillon Wade during the first transfer window.

What the addition of transfer QB Payton Thorne means for Auburn

Auburn’s recruiting under Hugh Freeze is “100 to 1″ change from previous coaching staff

Muskrat was the Golden Hurricane’s starting right tackle last season, and while he could provide depth at the tackle spots, he’s expected to compete for a starting job at guard during fall camp. Wade and Western Kentucky transfer Gunner Britton stepped in as plug-and-play options at tackle during spring practices and should have those jobs locked up heading into the fall.

A former two-star recruit out of Bentonville, Arkansas, Muskrat signed with Tulsa as part of its 2020 recruiting class. He played in four games and made one start as a freshman during the pandemic-impacted 2020 campaign and was limited to just four games in 2021 due to injury. The 6-foot-3, 307-pounder emerged as a starter for Tulsa last fall, making 11 starts along the line for the Golden Hurricane as a redshirt sophomore.

Muskrat has 12 career starts and 20 appearances under his belt. Now he’ll join Auburn, where he will reunite with Wade and former Tulsa coach Philip Montgomery, who is entering his first season as the Tigers’ offensive coordinator.

The Tigers have undergone a needed offensive line rebuild this offseason, as Montgomery, head coach Hugh Freeze and offensive line coach Jake Thornton have prioritized a restocking of the cupboard at the position, which for years suffered from underdevelopment and under-recruitment toward the end of Gus Malzahn’s tenure and during Bryan Harsin’s failed stint on the Plains.

Along with Wade and Britton, Muskrat joins Eastern Carolina transfer Avery Jones as portal pickups for the Tigers entering Year 1 of the Freeze era. Jones exited spring as Auburn’s starting center. Auburn also added top junior college transfer Izavion Miller and four high school linemen — four-star interior lineman Connor Lew, three-star tackle Clay Wedin, three-star interior lineman Bradyn Joiner and three-star tackle Tyler Johnson — to develop for the future.

Muskrat is the fourth post-spring transfer addition for Auburn and its 16th overall since Freeze took over as head coach. The Tigers have also added Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne, Ohio State wide receiver Caleb Burton and Appalachian State edge rusher Jalen McLeod since the end of spring practices.
