Bob Huggins uses homophobic slur during radio interview

West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins said Monday he has “no excuse” for using a homophobic slur in a radio interview earlier in the day.

Huggins directed the same four-letter word at Xavier fans twice during a radio appearance in Cincinnati on Monday morning. Huggins, now at West Virginia, was head coach at Cincinnati from 1989-2005.

Appearing on the Bill Cunningham Show on 700 WLW in Cincinnati, Huggins was telling a story about an incident when Xavier fans allegedly threw rubber penises on the floor during a game against Huggins’ Bearcats. Huggins then referred to Xavier fans as “f**s” and then “Catholic f**s.”

Huggins released a statement Monday afternoon, saying in part, “I used a completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase that there is simply no excuse for — and I won’t try and make one here.”

The 69-year-old Huggins is 934-415 in stops at Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State and West Virginia. He reached the Final Four with Cincinnati in 1992 and with West Virginia in 2010.

UPDATE: West Virginia released the following statement late Monday, saying that the situation is under review”:
