DeVonta Smith explains how Jalen Hurts has developed since Alabama days

If anyone can speak to Jalen Hurts’ development over the years, it’s DeVonta Smith.

The Philadelphia Eagles teammates have known each other longer before the Eagles drafted the former Alabama stars.

Last week, Smith – the receiver – joined Philadelphia Eagles teammate Darius Slay on his podcast to talk about a number of topics.

Among them was “how has Hurts developed since his time at Alabama?

“He’s developed a lot just from seeing the field, going through reads and things like that,” Smith told Slay. “Overall, he’s a guy that is going to be coachable and a guy that’s going to coach up other people. If they aren’t at the right place at the right time, he’s going to let you know. He knows how to go about it. He’s not one of those guys that’s just going to get on you and yell at you. He’s going to help you understand the reason why you are doing it and why you supposed to be there.”

In other words, he’s a leader. Not that Alabama fans didn’t already know that. Hurts became the college football poster child on how to deal with adversity.

Hurts was benched for Tua Tagovailoa and watched as the now-Miami Dolphins quarterback hit Smith on the famous second-and-26, game-winning touchdown pass in overtime to beat Georgia in the CFP national championship game.

“He still supported the guy that came in, still made sure he was ready because you never know what is going to happen,” Smith said. “The SEC Championship Game the next year, Tua went down and he had to come in, so he was always prepared. Always kept the same mentality and always approached things the same way.”

Hurts threw for one touchdown and ran for another with just more than a minute to go, rallying No. 1 Alabama to a 35-28 victory over No. 4 Georgia. It was a stunning twist on the scenario that played out less than 11 months earlier on the very same field.
