Report: State authorities looking into Iowa baseball
The Iowa baseball team is under investigation by state gambling authorities after several players were suspended for this past weekend’s series against Ohio State.
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission launched an investigation into the matter on Monday, Darren Rovell of Action Sports is reporting. It’s worth noting, however, that the IRGC has not stopped taking bets on Hawkeyes baseball.
“The commission takes the integrity of gaming in the state seriously and is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide any additional information when able,” IRGC director of gaming Brian Ohorilko told Action Sports.
Four players, including leading hitter Keaton Anthony and top relief pitcher Jacob Henderson, sat out last week for what the Iowa athletic department termed a “potential rules violation.” The school acknowledged the suspensions, but did not provide further clarification.
“Due to a potential NCAA violation, we withheld some student-athletes from competition, the statement read, via Hawkeye Report. “We will have no additional comments as this is an ongoing investigation.”
The news regarding Iowa baseball comes on the heels of the firing of Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon amid an investigation into gambling. Several states gaming commissions stopped taking bets on Crimson Tide baseball after what was regarded as “suspicious wagering activity” was detected in Ohio following the team’s April 28 game at LSU.
Iowa won two of three vs. Ohio State and is now 34-12 this season. The Hawkeyes face Michigan State on Friday.
