44-year-old man killed in fire at Birmingham apartment building

A 44-year-old man has been identified as the victim killed in last week’s Birmingham apartment fire.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the victim as Lesric Tyell Carter.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched at 8 p.m. Wednesday to the blaze in the 10 block of First Street North. They  had received reports of people possibly trapped.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the one-story building, said BFRS Capt. Orlando Reynolds.

They were able to quickly contain the blaze, he said. A search of the apartments, however, led to firefighters finding Carter unresponsive inside his bedroom.

Carter was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:20 p.m.

No other injuries were reported.

Reynolds said multiple other units were damaged. It wasn’t immediately clear how many residents were displaced.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
