A Midfield police officer is recovering after he was dragged by a suspect vehicle Saturday night.

The ordeal began about 8:30 p.m. on Bessemer Super Highway and ended a short time later on Woodward Road and B Y William Sr. Drive.

Midfield Police Chief Jesse Bell said the officer received a call about a person sitting at a traffic light and possibly asleep and intoxicated. The officer arrived on the scene and spoke to the driver.

“He jumped back into the car and took off with the officer holding onto the car,’’ Bell said.

“It was a short distance,’’ the chief said. “The officer was able to get back on his feet, jump in his (patrol) car and go after him.”

The officer got the suspect stopped and was able to hold him until back up arrived. A police radio call of an “officer down” drew officers from multiple agencies to assist.

“They were able to take him into custody just a few minutes after it happened,’’ Bell said.

The officer was taken to the emergency room and treated but did not require overnight hospitalization.

“It is a significant injury,’’ Bell said. “He will be off work recovering at a home for a little while.”

The suspect remains held in the Midfield City Jail pending formal charges.
