Smiths Station finishes 7A quarterfinal sweep at Baker

Khristian Hill tossed a complete game, five-hitter, while Jarrett Bonniot had three RBIs, including a solo home run, as Smiths Station completed a Class 7A best-of-3 sweep with a 6-1 victory over Baker at Larry Andrews Field on a rainy Saturday.

“We got some timely hitting, and we played pretty good defense,” Smiths Station coach Mike Ferry said. “The guys on the mound are carrying us right now.”

The Panthers improved to 25-14-1 overall and will face reigning champ Central-Phenix City in the next round. The Hornets concluded the season 24-17.

“Smiths Station is a great team and hat’s off to them,” Baker coach Tyler Minto said. “Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out our way.”

Hill (4-5) walked four batters while striking out two. He stranded six runners in the process, including getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth inning after giving up back-to-back walks.

Starter Connor Gatwood gave up one hit and one walk and struck out two batters in two innings before suffering an arm injury. Reliever Micah Cornelius (2-4) gave up two runs off two hits to take the loss. Bryce Cain closed the final three innings, striking out eight and giving up four runs off four hits and two walks.

Baker drew first blood in the top of the third when Brycen Brown hit an RBI single to short center field to score Cain for a 1-0 lead.

Smiths Station answered in the bottom of the inning when Brandon Green hit an RBI single and Bryson Sheppard added a sacrifice fly to move in front, 2-0.

Bonniot led off the fourth with a solo homer over right center field, then the Panthers broke the game open with three additional runs in the fifth. Alex Phillips hit a two-out RBI single and Bonniot followed with a two-run single up the middle for a 5-run cushion.

Baker’s best offensive threat came in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with a two out rally, but the light rain began to fall in the contest as it was unable to push more runs across the plate.
