44-year-old man ID’d as victim fatally shot in west Birmingham neighborhood

Authorities have released the name of a man shot to death late Friday night in a west Birmingham neighborhood.

Birmingham police identified the victim as Adrian Dewayne Christian. He was 44 and lived in Birmingham.

Police received a 911 call at 11:45 p.m. Friday reporting a person with a gun in the 1100 block of Fifth Street, off Arkadelphia Road.

A second call then came in that a person had been shot at that same location, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

West Precinct officers arrived and found Christian unresponsive in the roadway. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced him dead on the scene.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation indicates the unidentified suspect was walking in the neighborhood with a gun. The victim exited a residence and made contact with the armed man.

That’s when Christian was shot. The suspect left the scene.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the two knew each other, but Fitzgerald said the deadly shooting did not appear to be random.

No arrests have been made.

Christian is Birmingham’s 42nd homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside agency and three others have been ruled justifiable.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 57 homicides, including the 42 in Birmingham.
