Bohannon contacted former high school coach to place Alabama bet, per report

Former Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon reportedly contacted a former high school baseball coach for the newsworthy wager that’s led to a controversy surrounding the program.

Bohannon’s contact made a bet on April 28 in Ohio’s Great American Ballpark sportsbook shortly before the Crimson Tide played then-No. 1 LSU, according to “multiple sources” who told Action Network’s Darren Rovell. The bet came after Alabama’s expected pitcher, sophomore Luke Holman, was benched with a back injury “an hour before” first pitch.

The suspiciously large cash wager was flagged by U.S. Integrity, a third-party monitoring firm, triggering investigations in Ohio and Tuscaloosa. Gambling commissions in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Kansas and Indiana have halted betting on UA baseball and voided any future bets. The Ohio Casino Control Commission told AL.com it’s been in contact with the NCAA.

Bohannon was fired by Alabama on Thursday. ESPN then reported that the OCCC had surveillance video linking the bettor to Bohannon. Multiple reports have claimed that no players had knowledge of the illegal wagering.

“Alabama director of athletics Greg Byrne announced he has initiated the termination process for head baseball coach Brad Bohannon for, among other things, violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees. Bohannon has been relieved of all duties and Jason Jackson will serve as the interim head coach. There will be no further comment at this time pending an ongoing review,” Alabama said in a statement released yesterday.

Hours after Bohannon’s dismissal, the Tide knocked off No. 5 Vanderbilt, 11-2, under interim head coach Jason Jackson. The second game of the series is set for 7 p.m. in Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
