It’s Cinco de Mayo time!
Today – May 5 – is Cinco de Mayo. The holiday officially commemorates the day in 1862 when the Mexican army, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza, conquered the French forces of Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla. The victory provided a significant morale boost to the Mexican people and came to serve as a symbol of the country’s spirit and perseverance.
It is not, as many believe, Mexican Independence Day. That’s a totally separate holiday that occurs Sept. 16 and marks the start of the war of Mexican independence from Spain.
In the U.S. Cinco de Mayo has become a time to celebrate and any turn to their favorite Mexican food spot to liven up the festivities. Here are some of the best Cinco de Mayo deals, discounts and freebies we’ve found.

The Mexican restaurant chain will offer specials on margaritas, beers, tacos and shots from 3 p.m. to close. Check your local restaurant for specific specials. Restaurant locations will also have live music in their outdoor patios and cantina.
Chili’s will serve $5 margaritas all day to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. You can also get free chips and salsa when you sign up for Chili’s Rewards.
Chipotle is offering free delivery on all orders for this week through May 5 with the code CINCO23. The offer is valid online and through the app.
