Rickey Smiley files for grandparents’ rights to granddaughter Storm

Rickey Smiley has been publicly grieving the death of his son Brandon, 32, since January.

One of the most difficult aspects of Brandon’s death, according to Smiley, is not being able to see his granddaughter, Storm.

In a video the Birmingham native and comedian posted to YouTube on Tuesday, Smiley said he filed for grandparents’ rights to visitations with his granddaughter and claims Storm’s mother is withholding visits because of his filing.

“We on punishment because we file for grandparents’ rights,” Smiley told fans. “The baby really suffering because keeping her away from a good family is just insane.”

Smiley, who has nearly 4 million followers on Instagram, said he has asked for visits with Storm for two weekends a month.

“Hell, we’ll take one,” the comedian added. “You get so mad you won’t let us see her again. I don’t get it. … Life is something else, man.”

Smiley credited his then-3-year-old granddaughter with helping him cope with his son’s death from a suspected drug overdose.

“After the funeral, I was going to run home and change clothes to make it to the repast, and my granddaughter was there,” Smiley said during an appearance on “The Tamron Hall Show” last month. “I said, ‘OK, see you tomorrow,’ and she was like, ‘No.’ That was the first time ever that she had separation issues with me because she usually just goes home.”

Smiley cheered her up by taking her to a playground.

“To have that day where I’m actually pushing her on a swing. I could hear the swing squeak; I can hear the birds chirping. The sun was setting, it was cool that day, and it was quiet,” he said. “At the end of the day where you just buried your son, which is her dad, to push her on a swing like that I just think it was God just giving me a sense of peace and comfort.”
