U.S. Marshals found a man wanted for a child sex crime hiding in the crawl space underneath a Florida Panhandle home Wednesday morning.

According to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Travis Kyle Hoose had a warrant issued for his arrest on a charge of lewd and lascivious battery on a child between the ages of 12-16.

Early Wednesday, the U.S. Marshals Florida Caribbean Regional Task Force went to a mobile home on Dawn Road in DeFuniak Springs to arrest Hoose on the warrant.

When they arrived, agents noted movement inside the home and then interior lights were suddenly turned off. Making entry into the residence, Marshals searched the home and discovered a hole cut into the floor of one of the bedrooms, leading to the crawl space underneath.

The crawl space led to the back of the trailer where Hoose was spotted attempting to flee the scene, but was quickly apprehended without further incident.

“This kind of situation is why the job of a law enforcement officer can be so dangerous,” said Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “However creative they may get, the result will still be the same – with the suspect behind bars.”

Hoose was transported to Walton County Jail, where he is being held without bond on the child battery charge, as well as charges of failure to obey law enforcement; obstruction; driving with a suspended license; and a warrant from an outside agency.

Hoose is no stranger to a jail cell, having spent time in Florida prisons for crimes including drug possession, grand theft, burglary, criminal mischief, leaving the scene of an accident, purse snatching and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to jail records.

The U.S. Marshals Task Force included deputies from Walton, Holmes and Jackson counties.
