Alabama football, men’s basketball top SEC in academic progress rate
Alabama’s football and men’s basketball programs both topped the SEC in academic progress rate from 2018-22, according to rolling four-year data released this week by the NCAA.
In football, the Tide’s 995 APR score on a 1,000-point scale tied Ole Miss as the conference’s best mark for the four-year period ending in May 2022. It was also tied with Clemson as the fourth-best mark in the nation behind Columbia (998), Northwestern (996) and Wisconsin (996). The national average for all FBS programs was 968.
The football program’s APR score was two points less than the program record 997 set last year by Alabama, which ranked third nationally. But Alabama football’s scores have steadily improved since it received a 916 in 2004-05, the first year the NCAA began tracking the data.
In men’s basketball, Alabama scored a perfect 1,000 for a second consecutive year, with last year’s data encompassing the 2017-21 academic years. This year’s perfect mark was tied with Tennessee as the best in the SEC, and with 22 other schools for the best in Division I. The national average was 967.
Here are the SEC’s football APR scores for the 2018-22 academic period. Typically scores under 930 will subject schools to NCAA penalties, but those have been paused because of the COVID-19 pandemic and will resume in 2025.
