Defending boys’ Class 7A state champion Daphne opened its 2023 playoff run with a 3-1 win over visiting Baker on Tuesday.

Fourth-ranked Daphne led 1-0 at the half, scoring with less than five minutes remaining on a goal by Patrick McAllister.

The Trojans added two more goals to pull away in the second half.

Baker’s Hunter Freeny scored late in the game on a penalty kick.

The Hornets finished the season at 13-5-3.

Daphne (14-3-2) will take on Davidson in the second round on Friday at Sage Park. The Warriors upset sixth-ranked Fairhope 3-2 on Monday.

The Trojans defeated Davidson 4-2 earlier this season.

Second-ranked Westminster Christian advanced to the second round of the playoffs with the win over the Rebels on Tuesday.

The Wildcats led 3-1 at the half getting two goals on a pair of 35-yard-plus shots from Mahrk Royar and one from Bennett Mink on a penalty kick.

Westminster kept the pressure on in the second half getting goals from Joseph Steele and

Adam Hartman.

The Wildcats outshot West Morgan 21-12.

Westminster will play the winner of St. John Paul II and Mars Hill on Thursday.

Sixth-ranked Westminster Christian advanced to the second round of the playoffs with the win on the road over No. 10 Mars Hill.

The teams battled to a scoreless tie in the opening half. After the break, Annali Weekley scored twice and had one assist. Jasmine Feld scored a goal and had an assist and Clara Norris added another goal for the Wildcats. Brianna Tinsley also had an assist.

Westminster outshot Mars Hill 33-10 and Wildcat keeper Piper Blazier stopped nine shots.
