Coming off back-to-back 21-win seasons, Samford basketball coach Bucky McMillan has received a contract extension.

McMillan, 39, has agreed to a seven-year contract that runs through 2030, the school announced Monday. He is 48-35 in three seasons with the Bulldogs, including 21-11 in 2022-23.

“I am extremely excited about the announcement of Coach McMillan’s contract extension,” Samford athletics director Martin Newton said. “Bucky has brought a renewed energy and interest to Samford basketball. As a Birmingham native, his love for the community, combined with his passion for winning, makes him the perfect fit for Samford. The enthusiasm and school spirit since his arrival on Lakeshore Drive has been second to none and I look forward to what the future holds.”

Samford went 15-3 in Southern Conference play in 2022-23, sharing the regular-season championship with Furman. The Bulldogs lost in the SoCon tournament to Chattanooga, which eventually claimed the league’s lone NCAA tournament berth.

McMillan came to Samford after a highly successful coaching career at Mountain Brook High School, which he led to five state championships in 12 seasons. His first Bulldogs team went 6-13 in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, then has gone 21-11 in each of the last two years.

“Thanks to every player, coach, staff member, and most importantly, our supporters, fans, and incredible student body whose ongoing loud and vigorous support has made this arena one of the greatest game atmospheres, and one of the toughest places to play in the country.
