Woman stabbed to death in Jefferson County, man fatally shot in Birmingham Sunday now identified
Authorities have released the names of a man and a woman killed Sunday in unrelated crimes.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Erica Shontea Williams, 40, and Cornell Dewayne Richardson, 24.
Williams was found stabbed to death about 6:30 p.m. Sunday when Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to her home in the 300 block of 20th Avenue N.E. in the Center Point area on a welfare check.
She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Sheriff’s officials said the suspect has been identified as 50-year-old Cortrell Burks.
Burks is also accused of then going to the 800 block of 48th Street North in Birmingham and firing multiple shots into a home. Four people were wounded.
Money said investigators believe the home belonged to the Williams’ mother. The shooting victims’ injuries are not life-threatening.
Investigators continue to actively search for Burks. He is described as 6-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs about 250 pounds. He may have a shaved head and a grey beard, Money.
Burks was last seen driving a 2005 black Nissan Armada with Alabama license plate #1A0TBH8.
Anyone who sees Burks is asked to call 911 immediately. Deputies and Birmingham police are jointly working the investigation.
Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
Richardson was killed when shots rang out in a southwest Birmingham neighborhood.
Birmingham’s West Precinct officers were dispatched at 10:40 p.m. to the 3100 block of Steiner Avenue on a report of shots fired in the area. While they were en route, the called was upgraded to a person shot, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Police arrived on the scene to find an adult male lying in the roadway. He was next to a vehicle that had been shot into multiple times.
That victim was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
While officers were in beginning their investigation, Fitzgerald said, they learned another gunshot victim had show up at Princeton Baptist Medical Center.
That victim, Richardson, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“We’re in the early stages of this investigation but we do believe that the two males maybe connected to the original scene on Steiner Avenue,’’ Fitzgerald said. “Detectives will speak to witnesses and try to piece together what took place.”
“We believe two parties may have fired shots at one another,’’ he said.
Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
