New on Netflix May 2023

Here are all the new movies and shows you can stream on Netflix in May, including the Tom Hanks hit “A Man Called Otto” and the Netflix spinoff “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Check out our picks for the 10 best things you can stream this month, starting today.

American Gangster

Ambition and corruption clash in 1970s Harlem, where a charismatic drug kingpin (Denzel Washington) rises to power and faces off with an upright detective (Russell Crowe) and deadly rivals. Directed by Ridley Scott, a mostly good thriller that has a legion of fans thanks to the magnetic star performances. (Now available)

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Groovy British secret agent Austin Powers (Mike Myers) must foil the sinister schemes of Dr. Evil (also Myers). Hilarious spy movie spoof might be the best work of Myers’ career. The two just-OK sequels are also streaming. (Now available)

The Cable Guy

After moving to a new apartment, a recently single man (Matthew Broderick) hires a cable guy (Jim Carrey) to hook up his TV and gets a clingy, overzealous new friend instead. Exceptionally weird (and underrated!) comedy written by Judd Apatow and directed by Ben Stiller, featuring one of Carrey’s best performances to date. (Now available)

Conan the Barbarian

Brave warrior Conan the Barbarian (Arnold Schwarzenegger) rises to defend the people of Hyboria after evil forces slaughter his family and fellow villagers. Arnold’s first true Hollywood vehicle showed his action chops, right before he became the Terminator and one of the biggest movie stars in the world. (Now available)

Léon: The Professional

When his neighbors are killed by a DEA agent, a hired assassin (Jean Reno) becomes the reluctant guardian of a young girl (Natalie Portman) who begins to follow in his footsteps. Thoughtful thriller from acclaimed director Luc Besson, with a manic turn from the great Gary Oldman. (Now available)

Pitch Perfect

It’s a musical showdown an a cappella group revamps their stodgy style to take on a men’s choir in a university competition. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson star in this winning musical comedy that spawned two sequels. (Now available)

Steel Magnolias

Are you even Southern if you haven’t seen this? Six women in a small town share gossip and solve problems at the local beauty parlor, anchoring each other through life’s ups and downs. Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, and Olympia Dukakis with Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah and Julia Roberts star. Grab a tissue box. (Now available)

I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, Season 3

OK, one more. Tim Robinson returns for a third season of some of the best absurdist comedy in decades. You’ll laugh until it hurts, then you’ll watch the clips hundreds of times for the rest of your life. (May 30)
