Woman stabbed to death, 4 people shot: Jefferson County deputies, Birmingham police search for suspect

A woman was stabbed to death and four other people shot Sunday night in incidents believed to linked.

A search is underway for the suspect – 50-year-old Cortrell Burks.

The ordeal began just before 6:30 p.m. when Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of 20th Avenue N.E. in the Center Point area to conduct a welfare check.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a 40-year-old woman dead from stab wounds, said sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money. The killing is believed to be domestic-related.

The suspect in the homicide is believed to have then traveled to the 800 block of 48th Street North, inside the city limits of Birmingham, and fired multiple shots into the home.

Money said investigators believe the home belonged to the homicide victim’s mother.

Four people at the Birmingham location were struck by gunfire. Additional details have not been released, but Money said their injuries aren’t believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators are actively searching for Burks. He is described as 6-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs about 250 pounds. He may have a shaved head and a grey beard, Money said.

Burks was last seen driving a 2005 black Nissan Armada with Alabama license plate #1A0TBH8.

Anyone who sees Burks is asked to call 911 immediately.

Deputies and Birmingham police are jointly working the investigation.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
