‘College Hill Celebrity Edition’: Stars enroll at Alabama school in season 2

When “College Hill: Celebrity Edition” returns for a second season on BET+, viewers can watch eight stars living together and learning on the campus of Alabama State University in Montgomery.

This season’s cast follows Ray J — who is returning from season 1 — joined by Amber Rose, Joseline Hernandez, Tiffany “New York” Pollard, Parker McKenna Posey, Iman Shumpert, Kwaylon “BlameItOnKway” Rogers, and O’Ryan Browner as they experience the joys and challenges of student life.

An official trailer for the series shows the cast getting acclimated to campus, along with their colorful commentary.

We see the cast sit in lecture halls while ASU professors introduce the courses, from African American Literature, Crime Scene Investigation, and civil rights seminars led by Dr. Howard Robinson and Dr. Maurice Robinson, to the Fundamentals of Acting by Brian Martin, chair of the university’s Department of Theatre. And based on the stars’ on-camera interviews in the confessionals, the curriculum is a lot to take in.

“I didn’t know the history of ASU was so rich,” said Browner.

“Going to an HBCU, I’ll be able to learn things I’ve never heard before that I never learned about. But, like, today, I’m just tired. I need the rest,” said Hernandez, before a camera cuts to her sprawled out on a bed, snoring.

“I feel like I have an obligation to take this s–t seriously,” said Pollard.

Some cast members sign up for the ASU spirit squad, and the trailer shows some of the challenges.

“I’m not a dancer!” a visibly frustrated Posey says to the camera.

While there seem to be plenty of good times, like enthusiastic rehearsals and partying in the house, the series will also capture the comical drama and tense moments.

One scene shows Browner and Amber Rose sitting on the couch, having a conversation about race. Rose talks about having a Black mother and a white father while attending a predominantly Black school.

“My nickname my whole life was ‘white girl,’” Rose says.

“I am who I am and nobody can change that and I’m happy with who I am,” she tells the camera.

Seconds later, the trailer shows a heated classroom scene where Hernandez tells Rose “Your problem is, you really don’t want to be Black!” while Dr. Jacqueline Trimble, the department chair of Languages and Literature exclaims “Jocelyn!”

“We are extremely excited to welcome ‘COLLEGE HILL: CELEBRITY EDITION’ to the campus of Alabama State University,” said Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., President of Alabama State University, in a press release about the new season last year. “I want to thank Tracey Edmonds, Sean Rankine, Mark Seliga, and BET+ for selecting ASU as the location for the popular reality show that gives a global stage to the academic excellence, rich history and unique culture of the nation’s HBCUs.”

Last October, attendees at the 81st annual Magic City Classic — the storied football rivalry between Alabama State University and Alabama A&M University — spotted the cast in Birmingham during the annual HBCU classic at Legion Field.

Last week, ASU students got a sneak peek at the first two episodes of the season during a screening on the campus with Posey, Rogers and Browner.

The season will begin streaming May 11 on BET+.
