Roy Wood Jr. roasts Joe Biden, Tucker Carlson, Charles Barkley at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

“Y’all give it up for Dark Brandon,” Roy Wood Jr. said as he took the stage following President Joe Biden’s remarks Saturday at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington D.C.

The Birmingham-raised standup comedian and actor served as the featured entertainer at the annual dinner hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association. The purpose of the event is to generate revenue to finance “all of our work, including support of the journalists working to cover the president, events and programs to educate the public about the value of the First Amendment and a free press, and scholarships to help the next generation of journalists,” according to the WHCA website.

The dinner is traditionally attended by the President and First Lady as well as senior government officials and members of the press corps. Headlining the dinner in D.C. is a high-profile assignment as the proceedings are nationally televised and often go viral in politics and entertainer. The headliner typically follows the president on stage, and Wood’s job was to roast POTUS, the press and more. And he delivered.

After Biden’s own self-deprecating 20-minute set (cracking jokes about Fox News’ settlement with Dominion Voting Systems and Tucker Carlson), Wood took the stage. “Real quick, Mr. President,” Wood said, unfolding white sheets of paper, “I think you left some of your classified documents up here.”

Dressed in a designer tuxedo of his own, Wood noted the glammed-up press corps in the audience, cracking it looked like everybody “got a little piece of that settlement money from Fox News.”

Wood thanked the WHCA and then acknowledged few people in attendance even knew who he was. “Half this room think I’m Kenan Thompson,” he said. “The other half think I’m Louis Armstrong. President Biden thinks I’m the daddy off ‘Family Matters.’”

After making a dig about Rep. George Santos joining the cast of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Wood took a moment to weigh in on the drag conversation polarizing parts of the country. “Speaking of drag queens, can we stop with the grooming stuff? Can you stop talking about that? Drag queens are not at a school to groom your kids. Stop it. And even if they were, most of them kids are going to get shot at school. It ain’t no problem,” he said, drawing murmurs. “Don’t groan. Pass legislation. They think boos gonna bother me. I’m like Mitch McConnel. I ain’t got no soul.”

He transitioned to Tucker Carlson, who recently parted ways with Fox News. “The untouchable Tucker Carlson is out of a job,” Wood said, met with some applause. “Some people celebrate it. But to Tucker’s staff, I want you to know I know what you’re feeling. I work at ‘The Daily Show,’ so I too have been blindsided by the sudden departure of the host of a fake news program.”

He then told Biden they need to get Carlson back on the air because “there’s millions of Americans that don’t even know why they hate you.”

Wood also joked about Don Lemon’s departure from CNN, noting the longtime host claimed he wasn’t told about his termination directly by network management while CNN publicly said he was given an opportunity to meet with them. “They had to part ways because Don Lemon can’t even accurately report a story about Don Lemon,” Wood said.

Then came an Alabama reference, when Wood said he understood why CNN fired Lemon. “There should be no place on air for someone who speaks with wild disregard, that doesn’t consider the blowback to their coworkers or their company,” he said. “Thankfully, CNN has taken steps in the right direction. They got rid of Don Lemon, and they’ve now given a show to Charles Barkley.”

Wood wished Barkley’s new cohost Gayle King luck. “The whole show’s gonna be Charles Barkley saying something crazy, then Gayle King looking into the camera [saying] ’Charles…Charles…”

“The Daily Show” correspondent, who guest hosted the show in April, covered a broad spectrum of political humor throughout the 25-minute monologue including jokes about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Chinese spy balloon, TikTok and journalism.

Wood took a few minutes to comment on the media industry, noting it isn’t immune to scandal. “The issue with good media is that most people can’t afford that,” he said. “All the essential fair and nuanced reporting, it’s all stuck behind a paywall. People can’t afford rent, people can’t afford food — not healthy food — they can’t afford an education, they damn sure can’t afford to pay for the truth. Say what you want about a conspiracy theory, but at least it’s affordable.”

He mentioned his father Roy Wood Sr.’s career as a journalist, covering the front lines with Black platoons in Vietnam and the South African Soweto riots. He also mentioned his mother Joyce Dugan Wood, who was in attendance, saying she was amongst a group of Black protestors fighting for equality at Delta State University during the 1960s. “What would have become of my mother and those other protestors if a local journalist wasn’t there telling the story?” he said.

He closed by thanking his mother, who works at Miles College, for helping “countless students in Birmingham have the opportunity to see a college degree and to see an opportunity to grow.”

“I don’t know how to ever repay my mom for what she’s done for me and what she’s done for so many people in Alabama,” Wood said. “But just know, mama, if a white billionaire calls you an offers to buy your house, please sell it. Because I might want to become an NFT.”
