Did Jahmyr Gibbs get a former Georgia standout traded?
After Detroit selected Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th choice in the NFL Draft on Thursday night, Lions general manager Brad Holmes was asked what the pick meant for running back D’Andre Swift.
“He’s still our roster,” Holmes said. “He’s still part of our team. He’s still under contract with us. He’s a dynamic football player, so it hadn’t really changed the math there yet, but it is early.
“It didn’t really change. We just kind of put Jahmyr in his own separate box and just got really excited about the player. It didn’t really have any bearing on D’Andre.”

“Yet” and “early” turned out to be the key words in Holmes’ response.
On Saturday, the Lions traded Swift and the 249th selection in this year’s NFL Draft to the Philadelphia Eagles for this year’s 219th selection and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft.
Swift joined the Lions from Georgia as a second-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he’s entering the final season of his rookie contract.
In 2022, Swift averaged a career-high 5.5 yards per carry, but he had the fewest rushing attempts in his career at 99.
Jamaal Williams was Detroit’s top ball-carrier in 2022 as he ran for 1,066 yards and a league-high 17 touchdowns on 262 carries. Williams also is no longer with the Lions after leaving for the New Orleans Saints in free agency last month.
Swift ran for 542 yards and five touchdowns last season. With his departure, Detroit’s top returning rusher is Craig Reynolds, who had 102 yards on 23 carries in 2022.
In free agency this offseason, the Lions added running back David Montgomery, who had 801 yards and five touchdowns on 201 carries for the Chicago Bears last season. In his four seasons in Chicago, Montgomery ran for 3,609 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Philadelphia lost running back Miles Sanders after he recorded 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns on 259 rushing attempts during the regular season in 2022. Sanders signed as free agent with the Carolina Panthers in March.
The Eagles return running backs Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott from their NFL championship game and added Rashaad Penny from the Seattle Seahawks to the backfield this offseason.
Swift joins a growing Georgia contingent on the Philadelphia roster.
The Eagles used first-round draft picks on Friday night to obtain Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter and linebacker Nolan Smith, then added Bulldogs cornerback Kelee Ringo with the third choice in the fourth round on Saturday.
Last year, Philadelphia drafted Georgia defensive tackle Jordan Davis and linebacker Nakobe Dean, so this year’s picks made the Eagles the first team in the common-draft era to select five defensive players from the same college program in a two-year period.
