NFL Draft 2023: Who’s left for Day 3?

NFL Draft 2023: Who’s left for Day 3?

Through the first three rounds of the 88th NFL Draft, five quarterbacks have had their names called. Four of them came from the SEC.

But the last QB standing in the conference – and the nation – for the past two seasons has not been picked. Is Saturday the day that Georgia’s Stetson Bennett gets his pro destination?

The NFL Draft resumes at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday with the first pick of the fourth round, which will be followed by the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds until the 259th choice becomes this year’s Mr. Irrelevant at around 6 p.m.

NFL teams have chosen 102 players – 31 in the first round on Thursday night and the rest in the second and third rounds on Friday night – and have 157 selections to make on Saturday.

An SEC quarterback led off this year’s draft when the Carolina Panthers chose Alabama’s Bryce Young with the first pick. Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud followed at No. 2 to the Houston Texans.

Florida’s Anthony Richardson went No. 4 to the Indianapolis Colts, Kentucky’s Will Levis joined the Tennessee Titans at No. 33 and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker headed to the Detroit Lions at No. 68.

Georgia has won the past two CFP national championships with Bennett at quarterback. The other program that won back-to-back national titles during the playoff era was Alabama in 2011 and 2012. AJ McCarron, the quarterback for those Crimson Tide teams, was a third-day pick, going to the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 164 in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The most SEC QBs selected in a single draft is five in 1971 – Ole Miss’ Archie Manning (No. 2, New Orleans Saints), Alabama’s Scott Hunter (No. 160, Green Bay Packers), LSU’s Buddy Lee (No. 167, Chicago Bears), Mississippi State’s Joe Reed (No. 283, San Francisco 49ers) and Tennessee’s Bobby Scott (No. 340, New Orleans Saints). Two of those quarterbacks were chosen with picks that do not exist in this year’s draft.

With 31 players, the SEC leads all conferences in selections through three rounds and appears to have enough prospects remaining for Day 3 to challenge its all-time draft record of 65 selections reached in each of the previous two drafts, although last year the conference was at 34 selections through three rounds. The SEC’s top remaining prospects include:

· Alabama: Defensive lineman DJ Dale, offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor Jr., safety DeMarcco Hellams, cornerback Eli Ricks, linebacker Henry To’oTo’o

· Arkansas: Wide receiver Matt Landers, offensive lineman Dalton Wagner.

· Auburn: Kicker Daniel Carlson, linebacker Eku Leota, linebacker Owen Pappoe, defensive lineman Colby Wooden

· Florida: Linebacker Brenton Cox Jr., offensive tackle Richard Gouraige, safety Rashad Torrence II

· Georgia: Defensive end Robert Beal Jr., wide receiver Kearis Jackson, offensive tackle Warren McClendon, running back Kenny McIntosh, cornerback Kelee Ringo, safety Christopher Smith

· Kentucky: Running back Christopher Rodriguez Jr., safety Keidron Smith, cornerback Carrington Valentine

· LSU: Offensive lineman Anthony Bradford, wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, cornerback Mekhi Garner, defensive end Ali Gaye, linebacker Mike Jones Jr., defensive lineman Jaquelin Roy, cornerback Jay Ward

· Mississippi State: Defensive end Tyrus Wheat, defensive lineman Cameron Young

· Missouri: Defensive lineman DJ Coleman, defensive lineman Isaiah McGuire

· Ole Miss: Offensive tackle Nick Broeker, running back Zach Evans, defensive lineman Tavius Robinson

· South Carolina: Offensive lineman Jovaughn Gwyn, cornerback Darius Rush

· Tennessee: Linebacker Jeremy Banks

· Texas A&M: Safety Antonio Johnson, cornerback Jaylon Jones

In each of the previous five NFL drafts, 21 players from Alabama high schools and colleges have been chosen. Through three rounds in 2023, 13 players with Alabama football roots have been picked, including the first selection of a former state high school player in this year’s draft. The Detroit Lions chose Western Kentucky defensive lineman Brodric Martin, who prepped at Northridge in Tuscaloosa, at No. 96 on Friday night.

Former prep standouts who appear to be Saturday possibilities include Troy offensive lineman Jake Andrews (Stanhope Elmore), Maryland cornerback Jakorian Bennett (McGill-Toolen), Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham (Park Crossing), Utah linebacker Mohamoud Diabate (Auburn High), Charlotte wide receiver Grant DuBose (Park Crossing), Appalachian State running back Camerun Peoples (Clay-Central) and South Alabama wide receiver Jalen Wayne (Spanish Fort).

Alabama has had eight players picked, and Auburn has had two so far. UAB could get on the board on Saturday with running back DeWayne McBride.

Nationally, the biggest faller to the third day might have been Georgia’s Ringo, with Northwestern defensive end Adetomiwa Adebawore and Ohio State offensive tackle Dawand Jones also still available after getting more pre-draft buzz than the fourth round or later.

Saturday’s selections will be televised by ABC, ESPN and NFL Network.
