Biden commutes life sentence of Alabama repeat drug offender who sold crack

A south Alabama man had his life sentence for selling crack cocaine commuted on Friday by President Biden, the White House announced Friday.

Scottie LaDon Dixon, an Atmore man who was originally sentenced to life in prison and 10 years of supervised release before the sentence was commuted by then-President Obama in 2016 to 221 months in prison and 10 years of supervised release, had his term cut even shorter by Biden.

Under Friday’s announcement, Dixon’s sentence will expire on June 30, with only the 10 years of supervised release remaining.

Dixon pleaded guilty in July 2009, admitting that he had sold 6.2 kilograms of crack while he was under supervised release from a 1997 drug conviction.

According to court records, investigators with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force sent a confidential informant to buy drugs from Dixon in the Bay Minette area.

Dixon bragged about the quality of his crack and sold two “cookies” for $1,000 each in April of last year to the informant.

Federal agents raided Dixon’s home, finding him standing over a toilet at the end of a trail of cocaine powder leading from the kitchen, according to court records. Officers searched the sewage pipes under Dixon’s trailer and got some of the crack, according to court records.

Two other men with Alabama ties were among the 31 people who received commutations on Friday.

Andre Richard Harris, a Detroit resident who was charged in federal court in Birmingham in 2017 with possession with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, had his 10-year sentenced commuted to expire on June 30 with the remainder of his sentence to be served in home confinement. The five-year term of supervised release that was part of his sentence will remain intact.

Robert Raymond Palmer, a Mississippi resident, was charged in federal court in Mobile with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and sentenced in 2017 to 89 months and 23 days in prison and four years of supervised release.

Palmer’s sentence was commuted to expire on June 30 with the supervised release term remaining.
