Montevallo High School vandalism leads to 8 arrests, remote learning day in possible senior prank

Overnight vandalism at Montevallo High School led to the arrests of eight people and forced the school to go to remote learning for today.

Montevallo police were dispatched to the school on Oak Street at 11:40 p.m. Thursday on a report of a disorderly person. The 911 call reported that there was a large group of people present and damaging the school.

Floors and walls were damaged, and furniture overturned. School officials described the damage as significant.

When officers arrived, police said the large group of people immediately dispersed in several directions.

“Officer were unable to detain numerous subjects and continued to survey the damage,’’ according to a police press release. “Officers discovered heavy damage to the school, mainly to the interior.”

So far, eight people have been arrested on charges of third-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief. More arrests are expected.

Authorities said some of those involved are believed to be students, but it wasn’t immediately clear which schools they attended. They could not confirm the vandalism was part of a senior prank, which was a theory being circulated on social media.

Shelby County Schools spokeswoman Cindy Warner said students transitioned to remote learning for Friday. Cleanup began immediately, she said.
