Helena High School senior killed in overnight crash; memorial service planned at school for Friday
A Helena High School senior was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Shelby County.
Shelby County Coroner Lina Evans identified the fatality victim as Khalia Sith. She was 18.
Police and fire medics from Hoover and Helena responded about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday to the wreck on Shelby County Road 13, near the intersection of County Road 52, said Hoover police Capt. Keith Czeskleba.
Smith was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:44 by Hoover medics.
Czeskleba said investigators determined Smith was attempting to negotiate a curve when her vehicle left the roadway, striking several trees.
The Helena Police Department announced a memorial and prayer service will be held at 7 a.m. Friday at the Helena High School football stadium.
“We stand with our community and our students in mourning the loss of such a beautiful young spirit,’’ according to a HPD Facebook post. “When our community hurts, we hurt as well, and our prayers are with her family, friends and everyone she touched.”
