Paul Finebaum, others react to Notre Dame’s Tyler Buchner transferring to Alabama
Notre Dame transfer quarterback Tyler Buchner is headed to Alabama. He announced his decision on Twitter late Thursday morning.
Buchner, considered to be the best available quarterback in the NCAA transfer portal, is expected to have three seasons of eligibility remaining for Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide.
The Tide is coming off the annual A-Day Game in which neither Ty Simpson nor Jalen Milroe separated themselves from the other in the quarterback competition.
The reaction to the Buchner move was immediate.
“Interesting that (Alabama offensive coordinator) Tommy Reese is bringing in a quarterback he apparently didn’t believe was good enough to start at Notre Dame,” SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum told AL.com on Thursday. “Why else did he go after Sam Hartman?
“As for a (national) title this year, you’ve traded the No. 1 player in the NFL Draft (Bryce Young) for a backup from Notre Dame. You tell me.”

Buchner began last season as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback before getting injured in the season’s second game. He returned for the Gator Bowl, accounting for five touchdowns in Notre Dame’s 45-38 win over South Carolina.
“The real story is that if this was necessary, then the Tide’s recruiting evaluations have been off,” Yahoo! columnist Dan Wetzel tweeted. “They have four highly-touted QBs already on the roster.”
Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports writes the transfer has “massive potential at Alabama.”
