Athens police said a man who wanted to rob a bar was thwarted by the bartender and patrons.

The incident happened Saturday just after midnight at Mac’s Sports Bar & Grill, 733 Jefferson St. S.E.

Officers were dispatched to the area on a report of a person with a firearm. According to police, when they arrived they discovered that several customers had witnessed a robbery.

Jonathan Clayton Moore, 31, went behind the bar and demanded money from the bartender while armed. According to police, this touched off a physical altercation between Moore and the bartender, with patrons intervening by taking the weapon from Moore and detaining him until police arrived.

Moore is being held on $100,000 bond in the Limestone County Jail on a charge of first degree robbery.
