Birmingham’s third-tallest building is getting ready for a new life.

Atlanta-based Varden Capital Properties is planning to convert the old AT&T City Center, at 600 19th St. N., into more than 400 units of luxury apartment space.

The redevelopment, known as The 600, would place high-rising housing in the heart of the downtown business district, with amenities such as a fitness center, luxury resident lounge, pet washing station, retail shops, a rooftop deck and bar, and a theatre and media room.

Varden Capital Properties CEO Trace McCreary called the building “a connection point” in an interview with ABC 33/40.

“There’s a real vibrancy around Birmingham that isn’t there in all cities,” McCreary told the station.

WBRC reported the renovation is costing around $100 million.

Buckhaven Construction of Chamblee, Ga., is over the project.

The 30-story, high rise office building in downtown Birmingham dates back to 1972.

Formerly known as the South Central Bell Building, the AT&T City Center sold in 2018 for $31 million. The purchase came after AT&T employees moved out in February of that year.

At one time, it was home to more than 2,000 AT&T employees, following an $80 million renovation.

The property boasts approximately 700,000 square feet, 16 passenger elevators, and an attached 7-level parking garage featuring 644 spaces.

Plans for the 600 call for 435 units, with 1, 2 and 3-bedroom options, a rooftop/penthouse amenity space with wet bar and kitchen, and an outdoor plaza for ground floor retail.
