New York Giants add former Alabama defensive lineman

Former Alabama All-American A’Shawn Robinson has signed with the New York Giants, the NFL team announced on Monday afternoon.

The seven-year NFL defensive lineman became an unrestricted free agent on March 15 after his third season with the Los Angeles Rams.

After starting the first 10 games of the 2022 NFL season for the Rams, Robinson missed the final seven contests after sustaining a torn meniscus in a 27-20 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Nov. 20.

Robinson had 42 tackles, 10th among the league’s defensive linemen, when he got hurt.

Robinson joins holdovers Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams on the Giants’ defensive line. New York also has signed defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches, a former Central-Phenix City standout, this offseason.

Robinson signed a one-year contract with the Giants, with NFL Network reporting the deal would be worth up to $8 million if all the incentives were met.

Robinson was a consensus All-American at Alabama and played on a CFP national championship team in 2015, his final season with the Crimson Tide.

A second-round draft choice of the Lions in 2016, Robinson spent his first four NFL seasons with Detroit before signing a two-year, $17 million contract in March 2020 to join the Rams in free agency.

The coronavirus pandemic complicated his move west. Robinson qualified for a medical opt-out under the NFL’s plan to play during the coronavirus pandemic. That would have paid him $350,000 for the 2020 season and delayed the start of his contract until 2021.

Instead, Robinson and the Rams agreed to delay the start of his contract until 2021, and Robinson went on reserve/non-football injury with an eye on returning on a new pay plan for 2020 heavy with bonuses based on playing time.

A medical condition that Robinson described as “a respiratory situation (that) had happened in the past” steered him to reserve/NFI because of concerns about what might happened if he contracted COVID-19.

The reserve/NFI designation guaranteed Robinson would have to miss the first six games of the season, and he didn’t get on the field until Game 9 on Nov. 15, 2020, after returning to practice on Oct. 22.

After playing 2,085 defensive snaps in his four seasons with the Lions, Robinson played 111 in eight games for the Rams in 2020.

In 2021, Robinson played in every game for the Rams as he reached a career high of 67 tackles during the regular season. Robinson added 22 more tackles and a sack in four postseason games as Los Angeles won the NFL championship. The Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl LVI, with Robinson contributing six tackles and one sack.
