Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. While most people recover without issues, it can cause serious illness or even death in young children, frail or elderly people. In rare cases, salmonella infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
