Alabama’s last round of rain also brought a tornado along with it, it turns out.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has confirmed that a brief EF-0 tornado touched down in central Fayette County on Friday night as a round of rain and mostly non-severe storms moved through the state.

The weather service completed a storm survey of the area on Sunday.

The weather service said the tornado had peak winds of 80 mph. It had a path length of 2.28 miles and a path width of 125 yards. It touched down at 7:34 p.m. Friday just west of County Road 77. It downed several trees in a pasture as well as along County Road 101 at Piney Grove Road. One fallen tree knocked down a detached carport. The tornado also did some minor damage to the roof of an older manufactured home. The tornado path ended along County Road 67.

Severe weather was not anticipated in Alabama on Friday, though the weather service did warn some strong storms would be possible.

It’s been an active year for tornadoes so far in 2023, with a total of 53 reported so far. January has been the most active month, with 29 tornadoes. There were none in February and then 19 in March. April has had six tornadoes so far.
