Auburn basketball makes final 3 for former 5-star FSU transfer
Auburn is in the final three for another highly sought-after transfer prospect.
Former Florida State wing Matthew Cleveland is down to Auburn, Miami and Missouri, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. Cleveland, a former five-star prospect and Atlanta native, entered the transfer portal April 11 following his sophomore season with the Seminoles.

The 6-foot-7 wing averaged a team-high 13.8 points per game last season while shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range. He also averaged 7.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game while starting all 30 games in which he played for FSU, which experienced a rare losing season — the program’s first since 2004-05 — under longtime coach Leonard Hamilton. As a freshman the season prior, Cleveland was the ACC Sixth Man of the Year while averaging 11.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists off the bench for the Seminoles.
Cleveland was rated as he No. 25 overall recruit in the 2021 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, and he was an AAU teammate of former Auburn star Jabari Smith, the National Freshman of the Year, consensus All-American and No. 3 overall pick in last year’s NBA Draft.
Auburn is currently in the middle of an offseason roster reconstruction, as Bruce Pearl looks to retool things after a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance resulted in another second-round exit. The Tigers have seen five players depart the program since the end of the season, while two more are testing the NBA Draft waters but retaining eligibility for a potential return to the Plains.
Wendell Green Jr., Auburn’s starting point guard and All-SEC selection, declared for the NBA Draft and intends to start his pro career, while starting two-guard Zep Jasper has exhausted his college eligibility. Two of Auburn’s 2022 signees, combo forward Yohan Traore and versatile guard/wing Chance Westry, both hit the transfer portal shortly after the season ended. Traore committed to UC Santa Barbara on Friday, while Westry is headed to Syracuse. Reserve big man Stretch Akingbola also announced his plans to enter the portal as a grad transfer after he finishes his undergraduate degree this summer.
Auburn’s starting frontcourt, center Johni Broome and forward Jaylin Williams, both declared for the NBA Draft this week but left open a path for a return this season. Broome, a second-team All-SEC selection, still has two years of eligibility remaining, while Williams has his COVID year at his disposal.
Auburn also has a trio of new additions for the 2023-24 season: McDonald’s All-America guard Aden Holloway, the team’s lone 2023 signee; and transfer pickups Denver Jones and Chaney Johnson. Jones was a top-25 scorer in the country last season while playing at Florida International, while Johnson was the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year at Division II UAH.
